The GP out-of-hours telephone number for people in Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire is to change from Tuesday, 1 March, 2011.
Anyone in those areas who have medical problems that are too urgent to wait until their own GP practice opens should call 0300 555 0277.
The new number replaces the existing 0845 numbers and means patients using mobile phones will be charged at the same rate as those using landlines.
The GP out-of-hours service in both areas is run by Primecare and runs from 6.30pm and 8am on weekdays and all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.
Callers to the service are assessed over the phone and given either health advice, an appointment to see a doctor at the Phoenix Health Centre in Parkfields, Wolverhampton, or a home visit if the patient is assessed as requiring one.
All households in Wolverhampton will receive a letter informing them of the number change and, from March 1, recorded messages at closed GP surgeries will re-direct patients to the new number.
In South Staffordshire a programme of communications activities will be undertaken over the coming weeks.
